Most contract manufacturers have never had to sell a single unit of their own. Most brands have never made one. Natural Science Group deliberately does both: we formulate, test and manufacture — and we also build, own and operate consumer brands that live or die in the same market our partners compete in. That closed loop, from bench to basket and back, is a capability in its own right.
AniVatio and the direct-to-consumer practice
Our flagship consumer brand is AniVatio, the companion-animal brand founded by NSG co-founder Lisa Hilton and owned outright by Natural Science Group — with all of its nutrition technology, including the globally patented oral gel delivery system behind ProJoint, developed in-house by the group. AniVatio carries the whole NSG philosophy in consumer form: formulations built from research-backed actives at meaningful doses, made in the UK, explained honestly — a brand designed for owners who read labels and vets who get asked about them. Its milestones — the Chewy US launch and the Vetio UK manufacturing partnership — are recorded in our news archive.
Running a brand direct-to-consumer teaches things no briefing document can: which products get reordered and which get abandoned after one tub; what dose formats owners actually stick with; which claims earn trust and which trip skepticism; what customer questions arrive in the inbox the day after a product ships. Every one of those lessons flows back into how we formulate and how we advise partners.
Retail distribution across three regions
Alongside direct channels, our brands and products reach shelves through retail distribution across the UK, EU and APAC. Cross-border animal health retail is a discipline of its own — labelling and compliance differ by market, formats must survive longer logistics chains, and range architecture that works in one retail culture can fail in another. Having operated across all three regions, we bring working knowledge of those differences rather than theory.
Why owning brands makes us a better partner
It would be simpler to be only a manufacturer. We keep brand operations in the group for three reasons:
- Market truth. Our science stays pointed at what animals and owners demonstrably need, because we see real sales, returns and reviews — not just briefs.
- Skin in the game. Every standard we ask partners to trust — dose honesty, claim discipline, GMP manufacture — is one our own consumer brands live under first, in public, under our own name.
- Transferable playbook. Partners get advice from operators: range architecture, pricing structure, label copy that survives both a regulator and a customer review, and the difference between a launch and a durable line.
For a partner, this is the difference between a supplier and a co-conspirator. A white-label retailer gets range advice grounded in our own retail performance. A co-development founder gets an honest read on whether their concept survives contact with a basket. A veterinary group gets products designed by people who know what clients actually do with them at home.
Brand building as a service
Inside our partnership programmes, brand and retail capability is available as a workstream: naming and range architecture, claim-safe label and copy development, launch sequencing, and channel strategy across direct, retail and veterinary routes. We don't run your brand for you — it's yours — but we can put real animal-health brand operations experience behind your decisions.
Frequently asked questions
What consumer brands does Natural Science Group own?
NSG builds and operates its own direct-to-consumer animal health brands, the flagship being AniVatio, the companion-animal brand founded by NSG co-founder Lisa Hilton and owned by the group, with all of its nutrition technology developed in-house at NSG. Our brands are sold direct and through retail distribution across the UK, EU, North America and APAC, including AniVatio's launch on Chewy US.
What is AniVatio?
AniVatio is NSG's consumer companion-animal brand: supplements for dogs and cats formulated from research-backed actives, manufactured in the UK, and sold direct to owners. It carries the same evidence-first philosophy as everything else NSG makes.
Does NSG distribute internationally?
Yes. Our brands and partner products reach the UK, EU and APAC through direct and retail channels, and we advise partners on the labelling, compliance and logistics differences between those markets.
Can NSG help a partner build a brand, not just a product?
Yes. Within co-development programmes we offer brand and retail workstreams — range architecture, claim-safe copy, launch and channel strategy — drawn from operating our own brands in the same markets.
Why does a science company run its own consumer brands?
Because the market is the final peer review. Owning brands keeps our formulation honest about what owners and animals actually need, and means every standard we recommend to partners is one we live under ourselves.
