Walk through any decent zoo and you will pass hundreds of species, most of which no supplement company has ever formulated for. The commercial market serves dogs, cats and horses; everything else inherits products designed for someone else's physiology, or nothing at all. Natural Science Group's exotic practice exists for that gap: species-specific nutritional programmes for zoos, sanctuaries, aquaria and serious private keepers, built case by case with the institution's veterinary and husbandry teams.
Why exotic nutrition is different
Exotic work inverts the usual product logic. There is no mass market, so there is rarely a ready-made product; and the physiological range is enormous — an insectivorous reptile, a browsing ungulate, a piscivorous seabird and a great ape have almost nothing in common nutritionally. What they share is the problem structure:
- A wild diet that captivity can only approximate. Captive diets are built from available ingredients, and the gaps between what an animal evolved to eat and what it is fed are where deficiencies live — calcium and vitamin D3 metabolism in reptiles kept away from natural sunlight being the classic example.
- Thin published literature. For many species, nutritional requirements are extrapolated from a better-studied model species. Knowing when extrapolation is defensible — and when it isn't — is a large part of the discipline.
- Delivery constraints. A wary animal, a mixed-species enclosure, a colony fed at once: getting the right dose into the right animal is often harder than deciding the dose.
How an exotic programme works
There is no catalogue for this work; every engagement starts with the animals and the team who know them.
- Case review. We work from the institution's records — diet sheets, bloodwork, body condition, veterinary history — alongside what literature exists for the species or its nearest studied relatives.
- Gap analysis. Where the current diet, husbandry and physiology point to a nutritional gap, we identify it and the evidence for closing it. Where the problem is not nutritional, we say so.
- Bespoke formulation. Formulated for the species, the dose and the delivery route — into feed, a gel a keeper can target to one animal, a dusting powder for insect prey, or a premix for a kitchen that prepares diets in bulk.
- Monitoring. Programmes are reviewed against the measures the institution already tracks, with the veterinary team as principal decision-maker throughout.
Manufacture runs through the same UK GMP production as the rest of our work — small batches are normal in this sector, and our human-nutraceutical heritage means small does not mean casual.
