Vitamin E rarely headlines a product, but it underwrites many of them: the body's principal fat-soluble antioxidant, essential for normal muscle and nerve function, and the standard partner to high oil intakes and hard work — particularly in horses.

Every working muscle produces oxidative by-products, and vitamin E is the body's front-line, fat-soluble defence against them. It is an essential nutrient — animals cannot make it — and its supply hinges on fresh forage and diet quality. That makes it one of the least glamorous and most genuinely important actives in the library.

Where the need is real

Natural vs synthetic — a distinction that matters here

Vitamin E labels distinguish natural (d-alpha-tocopherol, often written RRR-alpha-tocopherol) from synthetic (dl-alpha-tocopherol) forms. This is one of the few actives where the distinction is more than marketing: the natural form is retained and used by the body more effectively, a difference the equine literature in particular takes seriously. Which form a product uses, and how much it delivers in meaningful units, belongs on the label — and on ours, it is.

Vitamin E rarely works alone. With selenium it forms the classic antioxidant partnership of ruminant and equine nutrition — complementary systems defending the same tissues, which is why the two are considered together (and why selenium's narrow safety margin makes the selenium page worth reading). Why do stabled horses need vitamin E?

Because fresh pasture is the main natural source. Horses on hay, haylage and hard feed — especially in work — commonly receive less vitamin E than grazing supplies, which is why it is a routine equine supplement, supporting normal muscle and nerve function.

Is natural vitamin E better than synthetic?

The natural form (d-alpha-tocopherol) is retained and used more effectively by the body, and much of the equine research favours it. Credible labels state which form is used; ours do.

Why are vitamin E and selenium often supplemented together?
