"Omega-3" is a family, and its members are not interchangeable. The forms with the deep veterinary research base are the long-chain marine fatty acids EPA and DHA, found in fish and algal oils. The short-chain plant form, ALA (from linseed and similar oils), is a useful energy and skin nutrient but converts to EPA and DHA poorly in dogs and barely at all in cats — so a product advertising "rich in omega-3" on the back of plant oil alone is answering a different question than the one most buyers are asking.
What the evidence supports
EPA and DHA have controlled studies in companion animals across an unusually broad front:
- Skin and coat — among the best-established uses: supporting normal skin condition and coat quality in dogs and cats.
- Joint comfort and mobility — published work in dogs supports EPA/DHA-enriched feeding for joint comfort, which is why marine omega-3s appear in nearly every serious joint formulation, alongside collagen and glucosamine.
- Cognitive and senior support — DHA is a structural fat of the brain and retina; research supports roles in puppy development and in ageing dogs.
- Horses — EPA/DHA supplementation is studied in equine contexts from coat and skin condition to recovery from work.
Reading an omega-3 label properly
The number that matters is milligrams of EPA + DHA per daily serving — not "fish oil content", not "total omega-3". Freshness is the other half. Marine oils oxidise, and oxidised oil is both unpalatable and counterproductive. Formulating with omega-3s means antioxidant protection — typically vitamin E — and packaging and manufacturing choices that keep oxygen away from the oil.
