If the actives library has a centre, it is the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Few nutrients in veterinary nutrition carry as much published evidence across as many uses — skin and coat, joint comfort, senior cognition — and few are as widely mislabelled by products trading on the word "omega" alone.

"Omega-3" is a family, and its members are not interchangeable. The forms with the deep veterinary research base are the long-chain marine fatty acids EPA and DHA, found in fish and algal oils. The short-chain plant form, ALA (from linseed and similar oils), is a useful energy and skin nutrient but converts to EPA and DHA poorly in dogs and barely at all in cats — so a product advertising "rich in omega-3" on the back of plant oil alone is answering a different question than the one most buyers are asking.

Reading an omega-3 label properly

The number that matters is milligrams of EPA + DHA per daily serving — not "fish oil content", not "total omega-3". Two products can list the same oil quantity and differ several-fold in delivered EPA and DHA. Our labels state it plainly, and our dog-label guide shows how to run this check on any product.

Freshness is the other half. Marine oils oxidise, and oxidised oil is both unpalatable and counterproductive. Formulating with omega-3s means antioxidant protection — typically vitamin E — and packaging and manufacturing choices that keep oxygen away from the oil.

What is the difference between fish oil omega-3 and plant omega-3 for dogs?

Fish and algal oils supply EPA and DHA directly — the forms behind most veterinary research. Plant oils supply ALA, which dogs convert to EPA/DHA inefficiently and cats scarcely at all. For the studied benefits, EPA and DHA content is what to look for.

How much omega-3 does my dog need?

It depends on body weight and the goal, and the honest answer is on the label: a credible product states EPA + DHA milligrams per serving and doses by weight. If a label won't tell you the EPA/DHA numbers, that itself is the answer.

Can horses have fish oil?

Yes — EPA/DHA supplementation is used and studied in horses, though palatability needs managing. Formulation and gradual introduction are how marine oils succeed in a feed bucket.

Why is vitamin E often added alongside omega-3s?

High polyunsaturated fat intakes raise the body's antioxidant demand, and the oils themselves need protecting from oxidation. Vitamin E serves both purposes, which is why the two travel together in well-built formulations.
