Selenium is the trace element with the narrowest gap between too little and too much in the feed room. Genuinely deficiency-prone on much UK and European ground, central to muscle and immune health — and the clearest case in our library for formulating against the whole diet, not on top of it.

Selenium works at the core of the body's antioxidant enzymes, partnering vitamin E in protecting hard-working tissues — muscle above all — and supporting normal immune function and fertility. Its supply chain starts in the soil: forage selenium mirrors the ground it grew on, and much of the UK and northern Europe grows genuinely low-selenium forage. That combination — real deficiency risk, real toxicity risk — makes selenium the discipline test of trace nutrition.

Organic vs inorganic — and the hard ceiling

Selenium is supplemented as inorganic salts (selenite) or organic forms (selenium yeast / selenomethionine), and the difference is meaningful: organic selenium is absorbed and retained more like the selenium in natural feedstuffs, building better body reserves. Both forms sit under legal maximum inclusion levels in animal feed — regulation that exists because over-supplementation is genuinely dangerous. Our formulation rules for selenium are absolute: dose against the whole ration, respect regulatory maxima, specify the form, and verify every batch through manufacturing QC. Stacking selenium-containing products is the classic feed-room accident; one product, counted properly, is the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Do horses in the UK need selenium supplementation?

Many UK soils grow low-selenium forage, so forage-fed horses can run short — but intake must be counted across everything fed, because the safety margin is narrow. If in doubt, a forage analysis or veterinary blood test beats guessing.

What is the difference between selenium yeast and selenite?

Selenium yeast supplies organic selenomethionine, absorbed and stored more like dietary selenium from natural feeds; selenite is an inorganic salt. Both are regulated to maximum levels in feed; the form used belongs on the label.

Can you overdose an animal on selenium?

Yes — selenium toxicity is real and serious, which is why feed law caps inclusion and why selenium-containing products should never be casually combined. Follow labels, count total intake once, and involve your vet or nutritionist in doubt.
