Captivity breaks both sides at once — feeder insects are calcium-poor and calcium-inverted, glass stops the relevant ultraviolet wavelengths dead, and artificial lighting only replaces sunshine if deliberately chosen to. The keeper's job is rebuilding the triangle on purpose.
Side one: calcium in the diet
Feeder insects — crickets, roaches, mealworms — carry more phosphorus than calcium, the inverse of what bone-building needs. Two corrections are standard practice, and they stack rather than compete: dusting, coating feeders with a calcium powder at feeding time (shortly before feeding, since insects groom it off), and gut-loading, feeding the insects themselves a calcium-rich diet for a day or two beforehand so the correction arrives inside the prey. Herbivorous and omnivorous species shift the work to plant choice — favouring calcium-rich greens and going easy on ingredients that bind calcium — with dusting still filling gaps. Side two: ultraviolet light
Most day-active reptiles make their own D3 in skin — but only under UVB wavelengths that room light and sun-through-glass do not provide. Species-appropriate UVB provision is therefore nutrition by other means: the right intensity zone for the species (a shade-dwelling gecko and a basking bearded dragon have very different requirements), correct distance and no glass or plastic between lamp and animal, and — the discipline most often missed — scheduled replacement, because UVB output decays long before visible light does. A lamp that still glows can be nutritionally dead.
Side three: dietary D3, measured
Where lifestyle or species limits UV synthesis — crepuscular and nocturnal animals especially — dietary vitamin D3 carries more of the load, and many dusting powders come in D3 and D3-free versions for exactly this reason. The keeper's rule is deliberate restraint: D3 is fat-soluble and overdosable, so the D3-containing product is used as directed on a schedule, not at every feed by default, and the plan for any given species is worth confirming with an exotics vet. UVB-driven synthesis self-regulates; the supplement route does not — which is why it is measured, not maximised.
Recognising trouble, and the honest frame
Metabolic bone disease announces itself in soft or rubbery jaws, bowed limbs, kinked tails, tremors, reluctance to move and, in late stages, fractures — and every stage of that list belongs in front of a reptile-experienced vet, because established MBD is a medical condition, not a husbandry tweak.
