No mineral moves without its escort. An animal can stand in a sea of dietary calcium and still demineralise its own skeleton if vitamin D3 — made in skin under ultraviolet light, or supplied in the diet — isn't present to switch absorption on. That dependency is background physiology in most species and front-line husbandry in others, which is why this pair earns a joint page in the library.

Reptiles: where the partnership is everything

Metabolic bone disease — soft jaws, bent limbs, tremors, fractures — remains the classic preventable disease of captive reptiles, and it is almost always a calcium/D3/UVB failure: insectivorous diets that are naturally calcium-poor (feeder insects run calcium-inverted unless corrected), plus captivity's substitute sunshine falling short. The standard countermeasures are nutritional and environmental together: calcium dusting of feeder insects, gut-loading them on calcium-rich diets, species-appropriate UVB lighting, and carefully measured dietary D3 where a species' lifestyle limits UV synthesis. Why do reptiles need calcium and D3 supplements?

Captive diets — especially feeder insects — are naturally calcium-poor, and indoor life limits the UV light reptiles use to make vitamin D3. Without correction via dusting, gut-loading, UVB lighting and measured dietary D3, metabolic bone disease follows. It is the defining preventable disease of reptile keeping.

Can you overdose vitamin D3?

Yes — D3 is fat-soluble, accumulates, and is toxic in excess, which is why it is legally capped in animal feeds and why reptile D3 dosing is deliberately conservative. More is emphatically not better; follow labels and species guidance.

What determines eggshell quality in laying hens?

Chiefly the hen's calcium supply — its amount, form and timing — working with vitamin D3 status, against the nightly demand of shell formation. Shell problems in a flock are a ration and health conversation, and one of the classic jobs of layer premix design.
