Copper: essential, interactive, and deadly to get wrong in sheep.

Copper runs enzymes behind blood formation, connective tissue, coat colour and immunity — and it is the most interaction-driven trace element in the feed room: locked up by molybdenum and sulphur on many UK soils, deficiency-prone in cattle, and genuinely dangerous in excess to sheep.

Ask a livestock nutritionist which trace element causes the most farm-to-farm variation and copper is the usual answer. The element itself does textbook work — cofactor for enzymes making red blood cells, collagen and elastin cross-links, coat and fleece pigment, and antioxidant defences — but its story on any given farm is written by antagonists: molybdenum, sulphur and iron in soil and forage bind copper in the rumen into unabsorbable complexes, so identical rations deliver different copper status on different ground. That is why serious copper decisions start with forage analysis and veterinary blood work, not a bag.

How we formulate copper

Copper embodies every rule the formulation practice runs on: dose against the whole ration and the farm's measured status, never on top of unknowns; respect the legal maxima that exist for good reason; specify the form (organic/chelated where antagonist pressure justifies it); balance against zinc and iron rather than dosing elements in isolation; and keep sheep-destined products on their own strict copper rules through manufacturing controls. Trace nutrition is a systems job wearing an ingredient's name.

Why is copper dangerous for sheep?

Sheep store copper in the liver far more readily than other livestock and can suffer fatal chronic copper poisoning from levels other species tolerate. Sheep feeds are formulated to restrained copper levels, and cattle minerals should never be fed to sheep.

Do horses need copper supplements?

Horses need copper in balance rather than in headlines — it supports coat and connective tissue, and balanced trace provision (copper with zinc, not against it) is the sensible frame. Forage-based diets on some ground run marginal; a balancer formulated for the job beats single-element guessing.
