Biotin is a B-vitamin at the heart of keratin production — the protein that hoof horn, claw and coat are made of. In most species gut microbes supply a fair amount of it, but hoof-quality problems in horses became one of the earliest and best-documented cases for supplementation above baseline: long-term feeding studies in horses associate sustained biotin supplementation with improved hoof horn quality and growth in horses with poor, brittle or crumbling horn.
The honest timescale
The hoof wall grows down from the coronary band, and replacing it takes most horses the better part of a year. Biotin can only influence horn as it is formed, which means two unavoidable truths: nothing fed today changes the horn already in contact with the ground, and trials showing benefit ran for many months of consistent feeding. A biotin product promising visible transformation in weeks is promising something hoof biology cannot deliver. Biotin doesn't work alone
Horn is keratin, and keratin needs more than one nutrient: zinc for the enzymes of keratin synthesis, methionine as a sulphur-bearing building block, and general protein and trace element adequacy underneath it all.
