The gut-health trilogy now reads: probiotics add live beneficial organisms; prebiotics feed the residents; postbiotics deliver the beneficial products and components of micro-organisms — cell wall fractions, metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids, and whole inactivated organisms — without requiring anything to survive the journey. The insight behind the category is that a meaningful share of what "good bacteria" do for a host comes from their structures and chemistry, which work whether or not the organism is respiring.

Why the category earned its place

Postbiotics solve the probiotic's two hardest engineering problems. Stability: with nothing alive to protect, postbiotics shrug off the heat of processing, months of ambient storage, and stomach acid — they can ride formats where live organisms struggle, including heat-processed feeds, a genuine unlock for manufacturing. Consistency: a defined preparation delivers the same composition every batch, where live-organism counts decay on a curve. The trade is honest, though: a postbiotic does what its components do — support for gut-lining integrity, the gut's immune tissue and a favourable gut environment — and it will not colonise or ferment on the animal's behalf. Different tool, not a better version of the same tool.

The deepest research runs through production animals: fermentation-derived postbiotic products (yeast-fermentation preparations prominent among them) are established tools in poultry, pig, calf and dairy programmes — supporting gut stability and feed efficiency inside the reduced-antibiotic playbook — with the regulatory machinery for the category maturing alongside. In dogs and cats, inactivated-organism and yeast-derived preparations appear in modern digestive formulations, often layered with pre- and probiotics in one synbiotic-plus design; the canine evidence base is younger than the livestock one, and our claims track that difference.
