Electrolytes: replacing what the work took out.

Sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, calcium — the charged minerals that carry nerve signals, drive muscle contraction and govern the body's water. Sweat spends them, heat spends them, illness spends them; electrolyte supplementation is the discipline of putting back what was actually lost.

Electrolytes are the least mysterious active in the library and among the most consequential in practice. Nothing here is exotic: these are the salts of basic physiology. The craft is entirely in matching replacement to loss — the right minerals, in the right proportions, with water — and the failures are all failures of that matching: plain salt standing in for full-spectrum loss, sugar-heavy powders trading efficacy for palatability, or electrolytes poured into a horse that hasn't drunk.

Horses: the headline species

Equine sweat is the reason this page exists. Horses sweat on a scale few animals match, and — a physiological quirk with real consequences — their sweat is more concentrated in salts than their blood, so hard work in heat removes electrolytes disproportionately fast. The practical canon for working horses follows: daily salt as the baseline every ration needs; loss-proportioned electrolyte formulations (chloride and sodium leading, potassium substantial, magnesium and calcium present) around work, travel and hot weather; always alongside water, never instead of it; and palatability engineered so the horse actually drinks and eats the plan. Signs of a horse behind on the game — flagging performance, prolonged sweat-soaked recovery, reduced drinking — are also exactly the signs that warrant a vet before a stronger scoop.

When does a horse need electrolytes?

Whenever meaningful sweating happens or looms: hard work, competition, travel, hot weather. Daily salt covers baseline needs; loss-proportioned electrolyte supplementation covers the spikes — always with free access to water.

Can I just give my horse table salt?

Salt (sodium chloride) is the right daily baseline, but sweat also spends potassium, magnesium and calcium; sustained or heavy losses deserve a formulation proportioned to equine sweat rather than salt alone.

Do dogs need electrolyte supplements?

Mostly no — water, shade and rest are the canine heat strategy, and panting losses differ from sweat losses. Formulated canine electrolytes have a place for genuinely hard-working dogs; suspected heatstroke is a veterinary emergency, never a supplement decision.

What should a good electrolyte product look like?
